All my cva's are 2010 models and all use the .500" thor without any trouble loading.

thors are .495 at the thinnest end but the skirt is flared to the size that you need. .500" is the smallest and it wont fit any of my older tighter bored cva's.

he should give the maxi balls or maxi hunters a try in it. I doubt you'd let him shoot powerbelts so the maxi's and even the hornady great plains...
