Luckydog, I hate to be a dissenter, but having shot game with both 12 gauge slugs and a .44 mag, I can say without a doubt that these are poor choices for elk. They are fine for deer sized game, but...

When I elk hunt with a rifle, I only carry my .338 win mag these days. In the past I've shot elk with a 7mm mag, .30-06, .300 win mag, all good choices, but I use a .338wm for about 90% of my rifle...
