I would say that the deer is alive. If you look at his eyes, they are reflecting the light. I think if the deer is dead, you don't get the glare off of the eye's.

Becuase shooting the big bucks is much more of a challenge than shooting the young bucks. Not saying that all young bucks are dumb, but it seems like the mature bucks present much more of a challenge...
