dumb question but is a 5.56mm and a .223 the same size cartrige? i bought a s&w ar15 today and wanted the box said .223 but i took out the gun and it says 5.56mm on it?

i've been thinking of buying either a 9mm or a 40cal pistol but not really sure which one i should go with. i will basiclly only be using it as a plink/practice gun but may some time in the future...

just got off the phone with them and it is used. its a model 11 with no accu-trigger. it has a simmons blazer 3x9x40 scope and they havent had it very long so there still firm on there price
