You would be better off going with the full length .338 Win Mag, first because of ammo selection, and second not many companies even make rifles chambered in .338 Federal, and the companies that do...

The 7mm-08 is without a doubt an excellent deer cartridge, I would also not hesitate to take it elk hunting, the 7mm-08 is quite possibly one of the greatest cartridges for such applications. IMHO
