Until you figure out the form and draw length, find an old tube sock, (Clean is best) cut out the toe and slide it on your arm to protect from the slap and cut down on the fear.

I can see how heat might cause one to bend. I have a couple of old ones in the garage and it is hot here in Texas. Perhaps it is testing time.

Doing what is right is seldom easy. Get a rope the land owner or the game warden but do what is right. Who knows when the land owner sees you respect his rights you may make a friend perhaps event...

I used to do this as a hobby. It does take time to do the mount. If he has to send it out for tanning it can take 3 or 4 months to get it back from the tanner and if not it will take sever weeks to...
