Do not and I repeat do not refinnish the gun !! By refinnishing it ,you can devalue it a great deal. Also do not refinnish the wood.
You should find some small proof marks on the barrel...

Well I'm working up a conical load for my scout 50cal. with a 1:38 barrel.
The last time I hunted with it here in Oregon we could use jacketed bullets and sabots , now only ball and lead conicals...

Here in Oregon the regulations covering ML hunting are moving back to traditional. Guns must have open ignition systems where the cap is exposed and not covered by any part of the gun before firing....

No ,I haven't seen a PA flinter. As for the half round half octagon I do recall that. If I recall right they were rifle models of the Scouts with I think 24" or maybe 26" barrels.

The photo doesn't show it but the TEXAS SCOUT shown has casehardening on the bottom,top and side bevel. The large side flats are blued.
The CODY SCOUT is full casehardened.

I have 2 Scouts the 54cal is a case hardened with walnut stock and its 1:20.
The other is a 50cal. also case hardened ,walnut and its 1:38.
I called friends who also have Scouts in 54cal. all...

Sounds like a keeper to me. These Scouts shoot as well as any lever action center fire I've had. I've watched the net for prices and thats a good price for a gun in its condition.

Sounds like the 50cal. came with two twist rates 1:20 and 1:38. I'm wondering when the change took place or maybe they were always available in both.

Sounds like we can rule out the 1:32 and there seems to be an agreement on 1:20 for the 54cal. But with the 50cal. most state 1:38 , although Short start mentions a puplication showing...

Funny as it sounds ,I just got my 12yr old son a BP rifle and a DVD copy of Jeremiah Johnson. The samething may dad did for me. He loves them both and like us ,is hooked for life.

I sent a letter to Thompson and got a reply to this question.
They said that in 1997 there was a fire at their facility that destroyed the Scout prodution area...
