you miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take. I am not ashamed to say I have missed alot of rabbits and even more birds.

I use a rope to pull my gun up. If you are worried about getting dirt in the barrel, put a piece of elecrical tape over it. I do that to keep snow out of it.
