RE: Comparing .243 Rifles

I also find that, providing you don't have to lug it around all day, a heavier rifle is easier to keep steady while aiming in the field. Just something else to think about.

RE: Bullet "Rise" - Dispell the Myth

ColoradoELK, yes it can happen even without a crosswind. The yaw of reprose is most likely the factor when this is obseved.

RE: Bullet "Rise" - Dispell the Myth

Good point, that plus what DM brought up:

This means if you sighted-in in July in 90 deg weather you'd better check your point of impact at the range closer to hunting season when you...

RE: Bullet "Rise" - Dispell the Myth

After a little sleep and more reading here's what I've come up with:

We've both over looked the fact that the Magnus Moment acts on the Center of Pressure and not the center of gravity. I'm...

RE: Rifle Hunting in Michigan

Well, I use a Remington 710 in .270 Win. I see a lot of other guys at the range with .270's along with the usual suspects like the .30-06, .308, and a lot of .30-30's. I've seen a couple of 7mm's...

RE: Bullet "Rise" - Dispell the Myth

This is good stuff, especially the web site you included. I'm still digesting the info they have. I think the problem arises in the fact that, using your example, a 3000 fps projectile is...

RE: Just Starting Need Help With Choosing Gun

Remington 870 would be my first choice but I think a good second would be the Mossberg 500. They've both been proven functional in combat and that's testimony enough for me. I was looking at a slug...

RE: Bullet "Rise" - Dispell the Myth

I agree driftrider. Considering that the viscosity of atmosphere is so minute compared to any liquid. And even in hurricane force winds (which I hope no one will be shooting at a deer then) and the...

RE: Bullet "Rise" - Dispell the Myth

Here's a little scenario I love to watch people try and wrap their brains around. If they get it, and it usually takes a little extra expanation, then they are in the right frame of mind to get...

RE: Bullet "Rise" - Dispell the Myth

I think you read my post too fast. You missed the part about the bullet path in relation to the plane of the barrel. Yes, the bullet "rises" in relation to the Line Of Sight, but not the the plane...

RE: Help on buying a rifle

They're not the one's who have to gut 'em after a 40 yard shot with that thing so why should they complain...hehe!

RE: Bullet "Rise" - Dispell the Myth

Well, if we really want to break it down (symantically or otherwise LOL):

As soon as the bullet leaves the barrel it starts "falling" in relation to the plane of the barrel. The rise is...

RE: Bullet "Rise" - Dispell the Myth

Barnes, That's one of those situations where you just want to walk to the nearest brick wall and start banging your head on it. Because you know you'll have better luck with the wall and who knows...

RE: 300+ yard Rifle which one?

Well, when it comes to "having enough bullet to drop the game" we need to look at the physics of what really kills the animal so we can quantify this. In this case I believe that deer is the game in...

Well, two things about boards are:

1. Some times the idea you're trying to express "behind" the written words doesn't come through the way the writer expects. Like sarcasm for example. When...

Thanks again!

I'm putting together my "wish list" of stuff that'll probably have to wait until after Christmas. I've got four kids that need stuff before this "kid" gets his toys...LOL!

RE: remington ammo = junk

That just plain sucks! I've been using Remington's CoreLokt's to take deer and target practice for years and I've been lucky enough to never have one misfire with 'em in any of my rifles. Wolf ammo...

RE: Remington 740

I'd take it back to Gander Mountain and tell them about the problem. To me it sounds like you scope mounts are the problem. It would be hard to "eye ball" the problem because 8" at 50 yrds is only...

RE: Best .270 Win for the money?

I've been looking at a Weatherby Vanguard for a while but since my Remington 710's .270 has been so reliable and accurate I can't justify the money for having two .270's right now. I don't think you...

I used to reload for my 9mm's years ago when I shot every Wednesday. It saved me a lot of money, especially when you consider the cost of shooting 100 rds per week sometimes more, and the hand loads...

If it's less than 75 yards as you say then I'd sugjest an SKS for someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of money to find out whether or not they like deer hunting. There's a great thread elsewhere...

RE: Slugs out of my bird gun?

I'd say as long as you're using IC you should'nt have any problems as far as the barrel goes.

With the smooth bore I think rifled slugs are probably your best bet.

Now, the only thing I'm...

RE: Which caliber would you pick?

I'll put in another vote for the .270! A nice 130 gr load for deer as someone else sugjested. A nice light recoiling wild cat version of the .30-06!

RE: remington 710

I bought my 710 in ‘02 and I’ve put hundreds of rounds through it (quickly approaching the 1000 mark) and put lierally hundreds of pounds of venison in the freezer with it. It’s paid for...
