RE: Best scope: less than ~$60

Well, I ended up finding a refurbished Bushnell Trophy (1.75-4) on Ebay for $69. I also bought a $40 B-Square saddle mount w/ 1" rings. All-in-all a little more than I originally planned, but the...

RE: How do I get him closer??

Murphy's law says I move my stand the next thing I'll be watching is the buck walking under where it used to be!!

How do I get him closer??

After a month of bowhunting and seeing deer just about every time out, the frustration level is rising. My stand is in what seems like the middle of grand central station as far as trails go, but it...

RE: Best scope: less than ~$60

Everyone - great feedback ... I appreciate your knowledge/experience/candor!

While we're at it, can you recommend a certain type of base/rings? Looking around, it looks like the default is a...

Best scope: less than ~$60

I'm looking at spending less than ~$60 on a scope for slug hunting, Winchester 1300 12 gauge. I'm leaning towards a red dot. Any suggestions?

RE: Slugs with smooth bore

In searching for a base, it looks like there are two common types: Weaver style and dovetail. Any suggestions as to which one is better (better in this case probably means availability of...

RE: Slugs with smooth bore

dogbreath -

That is definitely my goal and thanks for the advice. I am certainly very happy with the way my smooth bore is grouping, and am not concerned at all about not having a rifled barrel...

RE: Slugs with smooth bore

Any chance a scope off an old .22 will mount in the rings, or is a rifle scope totally different than one I would need for a shotgun (i.e., can't put the scope as close to your eye maybe)? Or, maybe...

RE: Slugs with smooth bore

I would love to follow the advice on a cheap red dot and rings/base. Except, I need more detail!! What is the cheap red dot, the front site? What do rings and a base give me? Do they mount on my...

RE: Slugs with smooth bore

I am grouping about 8-12" high. Are you saying that if I move the front sight toward the stock, and the rear sight away from the stock, the impact point will move down? I wasn't aware of this type...

RE: Slugs with smooth bore

Well, I went out and got myself of front and rear rifle sights that mount on my ventilated rib smooth bore. I was able to group my shots really well, with an improved cylinder choke, out to 50...

RE: Slugs with smooth bore

slugman - Ithaca Gun is about 10 miles north of town here. I would like to get an Ithaca, no doubt, and I could probably get a good deal ... but money is tight right now!!!

RE: Slugs with smooth bore

P.S. I agree with slugman, one shot should be all we need. If it goes beyond one shot, 6" accuracy goes out the window when you're shooting at a running deer!

RE: Slugs with smooth bore

Interesting. So, with a fully rifled barrel or a rifled choke tube, you pretty much ALWAYS want to use sabots. And, this makes sense to me, since a rifled lead slug would "grab" at the rifling in...

RE: Slugs with smooth bore

Thanks for the advice thusfar ... it's been very helpful. From what I've heard, my most economical setup is using something like Remington Slugger rifled slugs (~$3/box) with my smooth bore and...

RE: Slugs with smooth bore

I wish I could afford the rifled barrel/scope/sabot combination:(.

Are you saying that even with a rifled choke tube that I would still not want to use sabots?

Slugs with smooth bore

I have a Winchester 1300 Ranger with a 28" smooth bore barrel. I would like to use this gun to hunt this season ... in my area we have to use slugs. I could get a rifled barrel, but don't want to...
