I would recommend that someone just getting interested in bowhunting buy either a cheap used bow or one of the inexpensive new ones. There is no need to spend the big money when you are starting...

New Mexico does have some great mule deer hunting. You can get tags pretty easily if you are a bowhunter. The rifle tags in the best areas can be tough to draw though.

Last year I used the Rage broadhead on my elk hunt. It went completely through the bull and he died after going 50 yards. That is my only experience with an expandable and it worked great.

Havalon has some cool knifes...They are basically scalpels with extra long blades so they are VERY SHARP. I love them because I am not good at sharpening knives. Check them out.
