All the law enforement agencies we work with use either 168GR Federal Gold medal or Black hills, OR 175GR Federal GM or Black hills.

I have seen dozens of scopes fail due to recoil.
Yes, even Loopys and others, but mostly Tasco, Simmons and the lower end Bushnells, and of course BSA.

If a deer is 500 yards away, you will most likely have time to get an improvised support or get you rifle on the bipod.

I personally will not shoot a deer at over 400 yards, a whitetail deer...

The 308 does have more drop and is affected by wind more than say the 300 Win at extended ranges.
Drop at range is really not a huge factor, because all bullets no matter what they are fired from...
