IMO it's not needed if your shooting under 100 yrds. Most rifled slugs are good out to that range. And with a 20 gauge you'll be better off than a 12 gauge,due to the B.C of the smaller lighter...

Actually cooler air is more dense so this air is thicker in a sence. Don't you notice that smelly things always smell worse in the summer . Like garbage and such. At least thats how I see it.

Well it was cold out about -8 Celcius so the barrel was cool between all the shots although it probley warmed up some it would not have gotten hotter than when I shoot it in the summer and those...
