Every guide that I have ever got info from have told me 270/30-06 class rifle. I would use the 270/280 as my minimum rifle cartridge. I have used the Contender in 35 Remington and 44 Magnum as well...

I would pick the 30-06 or the old standard 270 Winchester Were I to go to a Magnum it would absolutely be the 300 Win Mag. The short Mags didn't do it for me and I tried them.
