From what you have said here I would say that if he rests the wound will eventually clot up and he will survive it. You have probably encountered places where it looks like he rolled around on it...

Don' t forget to take a bottle of peroxide with you and spray it on ANYTHING that remotely looks like it might be blood. It will make it bubble up.

Also it is hard to do if the ground is hard...

Aside from the moving parts...in Indiana I think you must have at least 1" cutting surface exsposed on mechanical broadheads. This is to protect against them not opening.
