It's just slang because "hmr" sounds like "hummer" if you say it like it's a real word and not an acronym, and also because it's a fast, small cartridge that brings to mine a hummingbird.

I'm not looking to explode them either. I was hoping to use them as bait for snapping turtles. I just meant it would be fun to get some shots off at yard pests, as long as meat is not wasted.

I can always have a pile of birdseed on the ground and shoot from above. There's an old treestand in my woods.
Sure it may not be cost effective but it'd be hella fun
So would the birds be...

Sparrows with a Hummer?

So my dream rifle is a .17HMR. I'm getting it soon. That said, I'd also like to control my English Sparrow / Starling problem without getting an airgun. Will the hummer completely obliterate them or...

Thank you for all the tips--I'll go and try out some shotguns at a good shop. I'd probably go with a 12ga. that fits me simply because more shot = more of a chance to hit the bird and more pellets in...

Do you think a 12 with a recoil pad would do well? Should I get a pump or a semi-auto? And do I need decoys/dog?

I could load steel shot into 16 shells if I really had to, the question is does it have much less recoil than a 12 or much more recoil than a 20 that would justify buying it over a 20?

16ga, 20ga, or 28ga shotgun for geese?

I'm a small girl (5"1') looking to start waterfowling. I have a muscular upper body, so gun weight is not an issue, but recoil is my biggest concern. Will a 28ga kill a goose or do I need the 20ga...

Thanks everyone! I guess I won't change my aim then. I think the hill or the tree trunk would be a fair backstop even for a rifle bullet.

Question .17HMR or Shotgun?

Hi all, I'm getting into small game hunting.
I'm planning for groundhogs, foxes, squirrels, geese, crows, doves, raccoons, etc. Foxes are the biggest thing I'm trying to shoot. (Geese are the...

Question Tree-Shooting Squirrels?

Drying Fish Skins

I live on a river and fish as well as hunt. Mostly, I catch bluegill, bass, a few yellow perch, and catfish.
Would it be possible to peel the skin off the fillets and salt-dry it until it's hard,...

.17HMR it is then. Thank you! What distance should I sight in at, if I'm shooting from 5-80yd?
Any good scopes? I'm looking for a scope <$150 or even <$100 since I'm shooting only about 80 yards out...

I'll probably be shooting only out to 80 yards, realistically. .22LR or .17HMR for headshots? (Not shooting chest, so, HMR's overpoweredness doesn't matter; I could shoot 'em in the head with .50BMG...

Since I'm going for headshots, I'll probably favor the CZ. Do you think that the .22LR is significantly worse than the .17HM2? Is it flat shooting? Is it accurate dead-on out to 125 yards, sighted in...

"get an air rifle" lol.
Okay, so I don't handload or reload. I want a rifle (<$500 if at all possible) that shoots...
