Well, I use frying oil as long as it looks goldish brown enough. I don't think you'll die from the bacteria in it since you're heating it.

I say get a Fiest also. They are super high strung though so you should keep them busy since they have too much energy. I have a Fiest for a year now and she's very reliable.
