For my part...

I won't pass judgement on others' choices.

I have taken both of my sons hunting with me. Made camp with them, taught them how to find your way, how to survive, how to shoot, how to be responsible....

Good advice that!

I process (with a little help from my BRO!) all of the deer I shoot with the exception of the first one I ever shot. He went to Tyson's Locker Plant and had the absolute worst taste ever.

Figure...

Metallic smell

I once noticed this in a buck that was liver shot.
It had run a fair distance, presumably pumping large amounts of adrenaline doing so.

Others simply bounded once or twice and died quickly,...

My $.02

Not to be contrary, my experience has differed.
I have found that deer tend to cross finger ridges, walk ridgelines, sneak through dense areas and get nocturnal around feeding areas.

Main concern...

Your Buck

Is a nice one man!

He'd have an extra 150 grains or so added weight in my neck-of-the-woods too!

Nice features and yep, probably tasty too.

You did exactly the right thing except for this:

1) Write down their auto make and model, color and tag number - not in that order. After the incident, write down everything about what you can...

SHOULD have a smell. Raw, blood-like smell.

Rancid or rotten meat will smell just BAD. Turn-your-stomach bad.

If you have a question about it, slice off a small corner and fry it in a hot pan...

Yes and no: The Electronics Wash will damage plastics. Best to remove those plastics before cleanup.

I've seen plastics literally crumble away using that stuff.

Be sure to check all of your gear for looseness.
Sights, flipper (if you use one), mount, counterbalance, etc.

Make a checklist then go back out and test everything.
