I use a 30-30 Marlin and have used both grains before and I honestly can say the grain doesn't matter, the shot placement does. If you are dead on and got good placement, then grain be damned....

I find "game time" is about 20 minutes before dark where I hunt. When the sun is setting, shadow is beginning to cover the woods, just before dusk, the deer begin to move. I'd have a go at it.
