This is what I do with my shotguns that are used for sea duck hunting in the ocean. The guns are covered in saltwater after the hunt. No rust in 10 years following the above advise.

I have both a 20g slug gun (rem) and 44mag (Rem). Both are pretty much the same in recoil IMHO.
You could always purchase reduced recoil ammo for both guns and install recoil pads on the stocks.

The 6.8 and .223 calibers use the same lower, and you just change out the upper by pulling 2 pins. Very easy to do.
The .308 requires a different lower made to accept the longer cartridges.

I hunt sea ducks and the gun gets soaked in saltwater. Clean after every hunt and have no rust after 5 years, you should be doing the same...
