I hunt all public land as well. I hunt off the ground & use natural cover for concealment. Blowdowns, trees, rocks, etc.

I'd start with a topo mapand/or aerial photosof your area. Look for ridges, pinch points, edges, etc. It will get you started. But you need to put in a lot of foot work. I've been huntingstate forest...

I used to compete in IPSC pistol competitions. One of the guysin the group I shot with nicknamed me "Rapidrick". I now shoot IDPA, but the name has stuck.

I have been using a Interarms Mark X in 30-06. Last year I carried a Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag using reloads. I just bought a Savage 16 FSS in 7mm-08. Not sure what I'll take this year.
