I can't tighten the vertical nut. It's loose. If I remove the vertical wing nut, how do I tighten it with an allen wrench?

Is it a must that you sight it at 30 yards for the pendulum to work properly or can I sight it at 20 yards instead. Most of my kills are between 15 and 20 yards. So if I was able to set it at 20...
