Shotgun scope

Looking to get a new scope for my shotgun and thought I would get some suggestions. I have two Nikon Prostaff's. One on my.30/06 and another on an H & R slugger that I sold (don't ask me what I was thinking when I did that). Both performed very well and I'm thinking of buying a third for my Mossberg 500; but wanted to see if anyone had a better suggestion.

I want to keep it in the Prostaff price range (less than $200). I will only be using it a handful of times each season and have yet to take a shot past 100 yards; so it doesn't have to be very fancy.

Thanks in advance!

I saw a leupold vari x 1 3x9x40 for $200. I'd go that route for sure. I went with another name scope before to save and ended buying again since I wasn't happy.

I have a Leupold 2x7 on my 870 slug barrel. If I recall, it was just over $225. Has held up well over the years and still very accurate.

I recently scoped another sidelock; while the Nikon was my first choice, it seemed a bit overkill.

I went with another Simmons 1.5x5 Prohunter.

Good scope, great price.

Simmons ProDiamond 4x32 fixed scope. Simmons has a less than stellar reputation, BUT this particular scope, designed for shotguns, has received very good reviews, particularly from the muzzleloading crowd. It's rugged, clear, and easily good for shots out to 150 yards. It's only about $60-70.

I've used mine for about 5 seasons shooting pretty stout loads both in the field and at the range. It's held up great.

Do you need magnification or just aiming? If you just need aiming, then IMO red dots are hard to beat. I'm in my mid 40's and don't need the magnification (yet), and have used a red dot on my 12ga for over 10 years. Unlimited eye relief, allows for off-hand shots, and the illuminated reticle is great for dawn/dusk shots on turkey and deer.

I've had great success with the Bushnell Trophy Red Dot with multi-reticle. Red and green lights, with 4 different options (3 MOA dot, 10 MOA dot, crosshair, or ringed dot (dot inside a 65 MOA circle). You can get it for $75-100, and comes with Weaver style rings.

+2, oh +3, wait....+4, ......make that +5

3 are 4X and one is 2X, they sit on my 3 current H&R USHs and 1 on nephews USH. They've been there for a long time and have been trouble free. I think their light gathering is fantastic.
