Optics For Slug Gun
 

Retired fixed income. Had an Eye operation about a year ago and am still learning to deal with it. I have good eye days and bad eye days, pretty much fixed focus in my eyes after the operation, cataracts, glaucoma and astigmatism.

I have an 1100 Remington, smooth bore I use mostly for finding and fixing wounded Hogs.

I've about settled on a Remington receiver mount. A little concerned about eye relief with this mount. I have a long thin head, so scope height or other ergonomic matters are fairly irrelevant. I have a spacer in the stock so way too close is unlikely.

To make a long story short I had a choice of what was most important to me, reading or driving. I really can't focus my eyes anymore. I cant see down the barrel like I used to, up close is worse than distance for me. Fixing it with glasses is a no go, some sort of weak eye strong eye differential, the Doc said no way, especially until my eyes stabilize.

Fixed power would likely be best 3 or 4X. I figure I can afford maybe $200 plus $40 for the mount.

Any recommendations? I'm open to either a standard type scope or something in a Holo setup (which I am totally ignorant about).

I have a 4x Burris on mine. Never had a problem with it.

Nikon Slug hunter. I had a similar one on my 500 mossy. It didn't have that BDC reticle and I really don't find those things useful but you may like it. It has 5 inches of eye relief so that wont be an issue. https://www.nikonsportoptics.com/en/...e-bdc-200.html

Since you plan on receiver mounting it then I would suggest a Picatinny rail such as this one and some forward mounting rings like this http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1477386787/weaver-tactical-thumb-nut-spr-1-piece-scope-mount-picatinny-style-with-rings-flattop-ar-15-matte
The base and rings are a little higher than your $40 bucks limit but you would be best served with a rig like that since you are receiver mounting instead of a cantilevered barrel rig. It will allow you to take full advantage of that 5" eye relief and not get the old scope eye. Hate the scope eye. It tends to leave a scar. Don't ask me how I know that :(

I think everybody has had at least one scope ding. Glad mine was minor. I've seen some semi serious half moon eyebrow cuts before.

I learned to back off that scope when shooting to the left.

Happens most often when shooting at sharp angles up or down hill.

That's when you really appreciate a scope with a good amount of eye relief !!!

My most recent scope eye scar, the worst one to date, was from my 12 gauge rifled barrel on my TC PH snap shooting at a fat Doe that did one of those famous whitetail tricks, you know the one, appearing from absolutely nowhere in a spot you had JUST looked at not 2 seconds beforehand!!! Dropped the Doe and my dang self in one shot! Not quite sure which one of us bled the most! Took 8 stitches and 3 of them little tape over thingamagiggers to close that puppy up. At least I had meself a hot doc doing the stitching (wife) :D
