Bad scope or bad bedding
Went out sighting in my 25-06. I just put a cheap tasco world class on it but am having some issues. I'm pretty sure I need a better scope but it seems to be a little weird. I shoot the gun about a doz times finally get it sighted in. Then I have 5 rounds that are within an inch. With 3 touching I figure good to go. I shoot at a clay pidgeon and I'm right on I shoot at a milk jug and I'm 6" high and right. Go back to the target same thing. I adjust my scope and it drives tacs. Then a few shots later the same thing off target. About 40 rounds later I'm irritated and rifle keeps bouncing around. So do you guys think my scope is jumping or is my barrel jumping around in the barrel channel. (Bought the gun used has the entire barrel channel glass bedded. It's an old school spanish mauser with Douglas barrel)

Likely the scope as Tasco's are not known for quality. Do you have another to try and verify?
|
no but I can get one. just a little worried that im gonna spend another 150 or 200 for a scope and it does the same thing.
|
Spend a little more on a new scope if that is the problem and you won't need to worry. It makes no sense to buy a good rifle and then skimp on the optics that make the gun worthwhile.
|
Where you shooting the same brand of ammunition?
Have you experienced similar problems with this particular rifle? When did you put the scope on this gun, did it come off another rifle? |

Bedding probably won't cause what you describe. To be safe though, I would make sure action screws are tight. Then I'd start by pulling scope and remounting to make sure all is tight. Next step is the scope. Decent starts at about $200 IMO.

I got the gun used all tore up, rusty barrel, stock missing half the finish and dents and dings everywhere. When I took it home spent the better part of a month getting her back to looking good. I have other guns that I use for hunting I just wanted to get her shooting so I wanted a cheap scope to see how she does. I am shooting hand loads that I use in my other 25-06 and that one shoots dimes at 100yrds so it wasn't the ammo. So I took it apart today at work and sanded the bedding compound out of the barrel channel to free float it. The after work I headed out to shoot it and re zeroed it and 10 out of 10 hit within an inch of where I was aiming so I think I was having too much contact on the barrel.

If you're worried about spending that little bit of money and buy something that cheap, you may continue to have problems! A good scope will set you back at least twice the money you're worrying about spending!

If I thought $200 was a LITTLE BIT of money I would buy myself a vortex diamond back or leupold rifleman.

Buying quality optics will only make you "cry once, but smile often."
Buying crap optics will only make you "smile once, but cry often". |
Don't cheap out on your glass. You get what you pay for in the scope department.
|
what was your sighting in procedure? It sounds like it could be the gun to me....if you are shooting with the barrel hot it can change the point of impact, then you shoot it again when its cold and its completely different. How much are you cleaning the gun between sessions? Are all the rounds you are shooting from identical lots?

Topgun, I shoot with a Tasco Pronghorn on my 7mm. It does exactly what I need it to, with aplomb. We don't all need $400 glass on a deer rifle that shoots out to 200 yrds, once in a very rare, great while. I can keep 3 for 3 shots inside of 1.5 inches at 150yrds. After that they get wild, becasue of the heat generated, and the super skinny barrel on my Ruger M77.
What I'm saying is that its not always about the glass. Sometimes, it really is the rifle, or the shooter. |

+1 also but now you can get the leupold vx1 3-9 x40 for $200 at most place basspro cabelas gander mountian. But most of the time the scope.is the first place for look at. |

You'll learn some day to buy ONCE and not buy cheap like you're doing and have to keep on buying, LOL!

Don't talk to me like I don't know anything if you think $200 is a little money send some my way cause it sounds like you have some to spare if I had more expendable income I would love to run a leupold vx3 on all my stuff but for a beater rifle why would I put a ton of money in an optic especially if I don't even know how it shoots it could have needed more work than a $400 scope.

In case you have selective reading, EVERYONE else has said the same thing I have, LOL! No, I don't have a lot of expendable income as a retiree, but I don't smoke or drink and the money for stuff like that goes into GOOD equipment. Try it and you may change your tune! As the other member stated, how are you going to know if the rifle shoots accurately when you put what might be junk on top of it! You might as well have used iron sights to figure that out and gone from there.

because I cant afford a $300-$400 scope it automatically means im a smoker and a drinker? how have you come up with this idea? my extra money goes into my hobby just like you but I also have a wife and kids that I support on my wallet and I would rather give my kids new clothes or buy them new toys so they can enjoy life instead of selfishly taking extra money to benefit a beater rifle I picked up of nothing. you don't even know me or what I have to pass judgment about how I spend money. here's any idea; next time you have a thought, Fart, it might get your head out of your ass.

SMH Why do the threads seem to go this way? The guy asked a question. Yes, the more $$$$ you spend the better. We all got that. But it's not feasible for everyone. I personally would rather see a guy actively hunting, enjoying the woods, with his $100 scope, than have a guy walk away from hunting because he can't drop $500 on a scope. I shot a junky scope for several years through college until I could afford a better Nikon. But it kept me in the woods, shot at least 15 deer, and gave me lots of good times. We know more $$$$ is better, but hunting isn't about $$$$. It's about enjoying the woods, enjoying the company we're with, and you can do that with a $100 scope.

If you are disquieted regarding defrayal that tiny little bit of cash and obtain one thing that low-cost, you'll still have problems! a decent scope will set you back a minimum of doubly the money you are worrying regarding spending!

Hell, you don't even need a scope...............Have fun out there !!!

Sounds like you got the rifle shooting and it was indeed a problem with the gun. I did want to comment on one thing though...the hand loaded ammo you said you were shooting in it. Sounds like the gun is shooting it fine, but just FYI for future...ammo that is loaded and shoots really well in one gun doesn't necessarily mean it will shoot in another gun well. I have guns that shoot certain ammo really well, but when the ammo is put in another gun it will shoot poorly. Obviously you had a different problem going on since it would shoot groups and then POI would change (but still had decent groups), but just wanted to share the above with you for future knowledge. Darn things seem to like what they like and it isn't necessarily always the same thing.
