I have an old beater Weaver/redfield on my 760 30-06 and it is poor in low light. Here's what I am thinking of doing, need feedback

- move the Ziess Conquest 3x9x40 to the 30-06 from the 7-08
- put the VX-III 3x9x50 on the 7-08 from the 300 RUM
- Buy a new longer range scope for the 300 RUM. Want to shoot out 400+.

Looking at 4.5x14x50? Shooting whitetail mostly. Like to keep it under $600 if possible don’t laugh. I have seen a few nice bucks in the bean fields this year and have the 300RUM sighted in at 300 zero and would feel a bit more comfortable with a lttle more power than 3x9

Scope swapping as you described sounds like a plan to me. I would suggest that you sight your RUM dead on at 200 rather than 300 yards. That should be plenty adequate for managing drop at 400-500 yards, and still leave you with an easy POI management at 100-200-300 yards. Check the ballistic charts for info ... better yet learn what the trajectory is of your set up testing at the range.

You might want to consider a mil-dot type reticule or one of the scope models that has an easy elevation adjustment for known distances. However, at a $600 budget, you might be somewhat pushed to find a really good low light performing 12X scope.

Chuck hawks thought it was a good scope. Don't know much about Weavers quality. 329 is a good price normally 569. I don't shoot the RUM that much maybe it would hold up? Does anybody have experience with this model of Weaver? Thanks

+1 on the Sightron Closeouts at SWFA. I cringe at the thought of all the money you will spend re-sighting in all those guns. I'd rather spend the money on a good scope.

I think I'd do what you plan. 3-9x isn't really enough for what the RUM can do. I run a 3.5-10x40mm vari-x III on my 7mm rem mag, while I'm using a 4.5-14x 40mm on my 300RUM. That scope has sat on my 300 for the last 10 years, and has stayed spot on, thru a few hundred rounds of pounding. Looking back, if you plan to do any close up hunting, I would suggest the 3.5-10x. Otherwise, the 4.5-14x would work great for 400yds.

What do you guys think of Nikon Monarch? I found a 4-16x50 Monarch with BDC for $379 at SWFA. Will I notice much of quality difference between the Monarch and the VX-III? Thanks

I compared a monarch against the conquest 3-9x 40mm last year, for my wife's gun. The clarity, and color of the monarch was substandard IMO compared to the Zeiss. You already own one of them, you know how good it is. I have a nikon camera, but their riflescopes leave something to be desired, IMO.
