Some shotgun barrels come without sights.Cantilever mounts are designed w/scopes in mind.Slugs also have much greater range than previously.

I've got a nikon pro staff 2-7x 32, great little scope and dont have one complaint about it. If I would do it again i would get the prostaff in 3-9x40.

I Recommend the leupold rifleman shotgun scope in power 3-9 for rifled shot guns, see my last post after I sighted in at 50 yards I shot out the center of the target .

Default Nikon Slug Hunter 3x9 with the BDC reticle

I have a Nikon Slug Hunter 3x9 with the BDC reticle on my H&R Ultraslug gun. Sight it in for 50 yds. and shoot accurately out to 200 yds. First you must find what sabot slug your shotgun likes best. Once you have done that, you will be more than pleased with the Nikon Slug Hunter. The optics are clear as a bell and the flexibility to increase magnification is there if you need it. I sighted my gun in at 50 yds with Remington Accutips and held a sub 4" group at 200 yds. (from a bench rest). Personally, I find that amazing. That gun with that scope and ammo shoots better than I can hold! Now if only I could carry the benchrest around in the deer woods!

As far as conventional scopes go you can't go wrong with Leupold but I have a Bushnell RD Trophy on my 835 slug barrel. Not a good choice under low light but here in NY with sunrise-sunset legal big game hours I have no problem with that.I would not use one for turkey hunting since we can hunt 1/2 hr before sunrise.

I prefer fixed powers for that type of application. Look at a 4 X 32 Sightron SII for example.
