Default which scope power

I just picked up a savage 22-250. It will mostly be used for punching paper, but once a year It will be used for ground hogs and coyotes.
I an interested in opinions on what power range would be most suitable.

If you can find a 4-12X variable or a 4-16X variable you should be good to go.

I wouldn't spend a lot more money to get more than 16X

My favorite all around variable is the Leupold 2 1/2 x 8. Excellent optics and the perfect magnification for most applications.

Not to pick on Sheridan, but the problem with your selection is that the scopes that you recommended are ok for a deer rifle, but totally unsuitable for a long distance target rifle / varmint rifle..

What you really want for a target rifle is a adjustable objective, a large objective and a sun shade to minimize mirage when you are shooting with a hot barrel.

Here is two examples of a real target scope that will not break the bank..

These are the scopes that I have on my rifles...

Mr. Deer Hunter,

If you read the specs you would see:

Burris 4.5-14x42mm Fullfield II Parallax Adjustable Rifle Scope

Large objective - your recommendation Bushnell is 40MM, the Burris is 42MM

15X is that really that much more power than 14X ?

Additionally, both mine recommendations are under $300 - your's ?

It's easy to spend other peoples money - sunsades ($25), etc.

I never quite understood why someone would have a 14-20X scope but not have target turrets. What good is seeing an animal from afar if I have to hold over to shoot?

Rule of long range is shoot hair, not air. Know the drop of your bullet and know how to read wind and trajectory.

If I am just going to shoot 200-300 yards, then sure a regular scope would work just fine.

BC,

You know they have BDC reticles now.

So for us plain folks with regular BDC scopes; we just go to the range and practice shooting the same ammo at 100, 200, 300, 400, 500....

Pretty soon you know the fouth line down is 400 yards +2" (or -1").

Sure, but its not precise by any means. I have a BDC on a nikon monarch 6-20 but also have target turrets. One cannot make good estimates of wind at 500yards with BDC. Your still aiming at air. You know how much a 32gr BT shot at 4050fps will drift with a 8MPH crosswind? I do. Quite a freakin bit.

Aim at hair, not air.

Wouldn't use a circle (BDC like Nikkon), but will use Lines or mil-dots to help dope the wind.

"I do. Quite a freakin bit."
