You haven't had VX's for over 15 years. They have only been making VX's for 6-8 years. You might have had a Vari-X which is a totally different beast than a VX. A VX is a 3piece body, a Vari-X is a one piece tube.
I have two VX 111 in 1.5x5, and one vx11 in 3x9, all over 15 years old. The 1.5x 5s see heavy use, and have never had any problem, the 3x9 not as much use but the same.
my 2nd 1.5x5 I bought used, and gave Leupold a call inquiring about having the scope gone over before mounting on a 45-70, to ensure no problems. Of course, they said, send it in and you will have it back in a week, no charge. It is very difficult to beat that service. I have 100% confidence in them.

I have an old Vari-X iic 3-9x40 which is about 12 years old and it is a 3 piece tube as well.

As with many shooters, we spend big money on the firearm that we have always wanted then mount a cheap scope and expect to shoot well. When I purchase a new rifle I have a purpose for that gun and purchase the best scope, if I mount a scope, for the range that I will be shooting. I would think that the majority of us shoot at yardages 200 yards and in. A high magnification scope at 200 yards is not a good choice. You will have a much better sight picture at distance, but too much magnification at close range. My favorite for hunting is the Leupold VX3, 2x8. Very clear with ample magnification from point blank to 300 yards. Decide what your going to use that scope for and pick the scope that matches your eyesight and range. Save your money and buy quality optics the first time and you will not regret your decision.

I had a 2 X 7 VX 1 on my Omega. I knocked it off a shooting bench at the range. The rifle landed scope first on the concrete pad. Not surprisingly the scope wouldn't hold zero. Sent it back to Leupold and they fixed it free of charge. A note with it said they replaced the erector. I put the scope on a 22.

nope! just got my 3rd today...
got a older vari-x II 3-9x40..bought it used...still works fine...
a few years back a bought a new VX-II 6-18X40 AOT...tracks true and is a fine varmint scope...
just today i got a NIB VX-III 2.5-8x36...VERY nice scope...i think im in love! alot say they cant tell II's from III's...but to me, my III seems a fair bit brighter...although my II's have a 40mm objective..i dont know...probably not really "worth" the extra price...but i got it at II prices

but im a happy Leupold customer...the Vari-x II ive had for 10 years now...and it was used when i bought it...its been through 10 years of heavy deer hunting..driving through nasty stuff...rifle took alot of hard falls...but no issues with the scope...

i only have one leupold but im thoroughly pleased with the workmenship of the scope. i dont really care if it has chinease ground glass or if its a 3 piece tube and im sure the next deer i shoot with it wont care either.
