what do i need for surf fishing?
 

me and my family goes lake fishing all the time,now we want to try some surf fishing can anybody out there help, coast of california, i know i need a break down rod, do the make surf rods that break down, also what kind of bait, and other tricks of the traid i may need most important one what kind of line should use and how much will i need, and will spider wire work, 30 pound test 6 diameter?

well bryc i also fish the calif coast ,and yes the longer the rod the better why as to cast out farther past the breaker's ,and a good pound test line whould be 17 # thats what i use cant go rong , i gess spider wire whould work but wont last long in salt water ,and the candy bait whould be ghost shrimp ,or blood worms ,available at most bait shop's near the coast , and yes they make surf rod's that break down try like k-mart or walmart they have a good selection remember buy the longest surf rod you can get that way you will can cast out farther ,dont bother with spider wire for now just get a good 17# line and rig it whith a 2 ounce lead sinker and about 12 inch leader ,try using strips of squid it wont fly off like the candy bait i mentioned earlyer , ok i hope i helped ya out sea yas <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Another important item is sinker selection, if the bottom is sandy you want pyramid sinkers and get a variety of weights. 2 ounces is a minimum, the heavier the current/surf the more weight you will need. I have fished some rip tides that took 6 ounces to stay in place. Use as little weight as possible, an extra ounce can make a huge difference so I would get 2, 3, & 4 ouncers. Be prepared to break off also.

10 ft rod is a good length rod rated to cast at least 4 ounces maybe five. If your just getting started, keep it simple. Buy a few Pyramid sinkers in 2 to 4 ounce, buy some top and bottom rigs at the local tackle shop.

Spider wire will last just as long as mono will. I use another Braid called Power Pro and it outlast any mono I have ever used. But like I said if your just starting out, keep it simple.
