AccuBond 180 for 300winmag
 

I just tried to load some AccuBond 180s for my 300 win mag using 75 gr RL22. I had trouble seating them deep enough. Could not get the col down to 3.34 and had trouble getting them to chamber in my M77. I'm about out of RL22. Will a different, faster burning power give me more room to use a 180 AB? I had even considered using 200 AB. I'm glad I just bought the 180s.

Well, RL22 is long and that is a seriously compressed load. I suggest IMR4350 myself or 4831sc. You won't have a problem so much with compression I think. Only problem with 4831 is it compressed too at 74gr.

Several techniques for compressed loads. pour your powder in very slowly in a swirling fashion. Might gain you some room.

I handload for my 300-win mag. Accord to Nosler, the Nosler Protected Point Partition was designed for use in the 300-win mag.
Last year I tried the 200-grain Nosler Accubond in my 300-win mag. I have no problems seating the 200-grain accubond deep enough with my "pet load".

My pet load:
Fed 215-mag primer
68-grains H-4831SC
200-grain Nosler Accubond.

These new short cut powders pack in a case a little better than the older long kernals. Also, consider using a drop tube. Can make one out of an Easton arrow shaft and small funnel - I have seen charges go from filling the neck to the top - and after the drop tube, to coming only up to the bottom of the neck. Slows the process down a little, but it works. Best wishes. Roscoe.

Maybe you do this or not,but just if your powder load is close to max or max , pkut your finger on top of the case and tap the case on your reloading bench a couple of times and it will compress some by itself. When using faster burnling powder one does use less amount in volume so you won,t have that problem. I,m sure you can find many other powders that will give you the results you desire in some other loads in loading books. vangunsmith

handloader1 Can you give us more details on 7828 SSC? I am just guessing that it is a "short cut" version of 7828?:eek:

The Nosler bullets don't have to be seated down to 3.340" , although it's the max COL in all reloading manuals, mine doesn't recommend it and also says it gets better results if it's loaded at a longer length. Alot of people like to seat them just off the lands or whatever length the magazine will allow.

I have to load my 54 grain charge of RE22 into the 7X57mm Mauser case in two increments. I trickle in about half the load, then tap the case about 20 times with a screwdriver handle, then load the second part of the charge very slowly, and then tap it to settle it also. This leaves me just about 1/4 of the length of the case neck open to start the bullet. Obviously, this is a compressed load, but it is very accurate and uniform in performance.

You might consider purchaing a long drop tube to use to get more powder into a case, or switching to a ball powder that has about the same burning rate. Some powder compression is OK, but it can be overdone. DON'T compress to the point that bullets back out or case shoulders expand!
