More neck problems
Well, I sat down today to press the last of the new Rem brass I had for my 300 RUM. (~ 30 rnds) so as usual I noticed some of the necks were dinged a little so I ran them through my sizing die (turned one turn up from top of brass) partial full lengthed them. Weighed my charges and seated the bulets. Well, I noticed that the bullet would start like normal, but then near half way my press handle would almost fall the rest of the way, very loose. So I pulled the shell out and could push the bullet the rest of the way into the neck. This is the second time this has happened and they are NEW cases????? So I said heck with it, and full length resized a case, and tried to seat a bullet .....same result. I measured my bullets, they are perfectly .308, I measured my case mouth and it was .305......seemed right?!? my only guess is, could the expander ball be off? I guess I could pull it apart, and measure, but I dont know what is should be. Anyone ever come acrossed this before?

RE: More neck problems
You got me. If you measure you case mouth after sizing and its .305, then thats more than enough neck tension. Have you taken apart you dies? I measure .3065"on my expander ball. When it FL sizes without the expander ball, case mouth is .3055". Do you feel a drag when pull you case back thru the expander ball? Also do you have alot of lube in you necks? Don't need that much remember. Could but doubtful be a bad batch of brass they didn't anneal properly. Never seen it but I wouldn't put it past remington.
I mean I have fired 300RUM three times thru the same brass that has been FL sized and still haven't encounter this. Also, when seating you are are not setting up to crimp? Right? Put in a loaded pieced of brass, no bullet of course and put your sizer in until it hits your case mouth and back out one full turn? |
RE: More neck problems
ok, after 2 hours of pulling my hair out, and calling Bigcountry and my gunsmith, here's what I found........ I got a different box of .308 bullets, (some 150 gr B/T's) and tried to seat them. They seated perfectly, didnt push back in. So I had another batch of Accubonds (purchased about 3 months later) still sealed, so I busted them opened and they seated fine. Tommorrow at work I will get my set of micrometers and check these bullets out. I guess I got a bad batch of bullets. I sure as heck hope Nosler will handle this to my satisfaction, considering all 21 boxes of bullets on my bench have their name on them. Ill let yall know how this turns out.

RE: More neck problems
How do you "adjust" your neck expanding unit? Are you talking about replacing the expander ball with a smaller one?
