30 cal 200 grain bullets for elk?
How many of you have used 200 grain bullet in you 300's for elk? I have worked up some loads (200 grain accubond) in my .300 RUM but have not been out to try them yet. My brother in law shot his elk last year with a 200 grain accubond in his .300 Win. Is there any difference that you could notice between the 180 grain and the 200 grain. Of course to compare and be fair both would have to be the same type of bullet.

If any cartridge should kill an elk with that bullet yours should!! Don,t worry, but remember even though it a big gun, bullet placement is still and always be the most immportant attitude. vangunsmith

The 200gr accubond will certainly do a good job although a 200gr bullet is certainly not required to kill elk.

I have used the 200 grain bullet in the 300 Win Mag and the 30-06 for elk. I have also used the 190 grain Hornady in the 308 for elk. I never noticed any real difference between the 180 grain and the 200 grain. However on a shoulder or other major bone hit, it may make a difference. The 180 is plenty of bullet though from any 30 caliber.

The 200 grain Sierra Boattail is the only bullet of this weight I have seen used on elk. It worked very well! Sierra uses a little antimony in the lead core of this bullet, and it appears to be tougher than the regular run of the mill Sierras. Broke both shoulders of a 5 X 5 bull at close range without coming apart. (gun was a .300 Winchester)
