wanting to load speer TNT's in my 22-250
 

The 50 grain .224 dia TNT bullet according to speer has a 3400 fps max velocity set for it, has anyone had any experiences with pushing these faster?? or would it just be wiser to tune down the charge weights and work them up and use my chrony untill i near the 3400 fps mark?? also I dont think i would mind pushing lower velocity because the 22-250 is a known barrel burner and essentially lower velocities would slow the rate of barrel wear, would that be correct? thanks in advance

I don't have that much experience with the TNT. However I loaded some Horanday SX in a 220 swift. The SX has a thin jacket like the TNT for explosive results and too has a limit for velocity. The barrel we were using had a 1:14 twist and we were able to get the bullet to higher than recommended velocitys. However, later during the year we were shooting and they were tornadoing out of the barrel. Not sure what the reason was, I am assuming humidity had something to do with it but they were unwrapping in the air. You could see a gray streak in the air & nothing was making it to the 100yd target. Using that info and applying it to a different animal (have to love opinions;)) I think you can probably push them faster than the published velocity (depending on twist) but you may have problems down the road if you are sitting on the volital line. As usual (factories spending thousands of $ and being right) it would be best to hold them real close to 3400. You will not be able to tell a diff between 3400 & 3490 (or so) anyway.

never used the TNT's but have experience with the SX bullets and have had the same results when I pushed them over the recommended velocities, gray smoke and little fly speck holes at different positions around the target... would imagine it would be a prudent call to follow the factory recommendations... if they perform like the SX did you'll be pleased with them... never had one exit a groundhog... body shots and it'll completely disjoint a hog from the hydrostatic shock... like picking up a sack full of cooked oatmeal... nothing but mush inside... :D

I've used literally thousands of the 50 Gr TNTs in the 220 swift and the .22-250 and at full throttle loads.....and they're GREAT bullets.....Run them as fast as you want in those 1-14 twist barrels!!!

Ive used sx for many year,and i like the tnt better for me anyway.The tnt seem to have better accuracy in my rifle,and they reall y make the fur fly is there is any left. vangunsmith

my rifle has a 1 in 12 twist, its a custom rifle built on a savage action with a 24 1/4 inch heavy barrel with a competition crown made by a friend of mine. with a few other extras like a jarden trigger set at 1lb 8 oz choate ultimate varmint stock, custom desert camo paint job pretty sweet rifle, its a .5 MOA rifle easy. it does great with 60 grain v-max bullets just they arent very explosive on impact at long ranges say in excess of 300 yards. the reason i like the TNT's is speer claims they will have explosive expansion even at velocities as low as 1800 fps.

If Vapodog is pushing the bullet 3700+ with a 1:14 you should be able to get well above 3400 with 1:12. Centripetal force would be causing factor with the bullet rupture. The added twist is a difference but not extremely substantial. I'm sure it could be calculated, just don't know the failing point? It will be easier to experiment with it. Let us know how they do!!!![>:]

3700'/sec at 14" twist is about 3200 rev/sec.....3400'/sec at 12" twist is 3400 rev/sec.....actually a faster RPS than a .22-250 at 3700.

Try the savage 9" twist at 3400'/sec.....that's 4500 RPS and this is where you will see the most evaporated bullets.....through the Savage rifles with the fast twists.
