Hello,

I read the forum, right much but haven’t posted. I had a quick question thought ya'll could give me some advice.

I have a Rem 700 classic in .223Rem. The twist is 1:12. I have heard ALOT of talk that the slower twist will not stabilize a >55gr bullet.

The factory rile (with the exception of trigger work) will currently "cloverleaf" with 55gr V-max with 24.7 gr of H335. It also likes 55gr blitz-kings with the same push. I was wanting to shoot a little heavier bullet VIA a 60gr V-max or 60 gr Sierra HP.

Without wasting money & (most important...) time. Will my rifle shoot the 60 grain? Any paper printing outside of touching would be unacceptable.

If it's shooting the 55 gr that well it should shoot the 60 gr without problem. The only way you going to know is to try it.

I had a rem m700 adl in .223 with that 1 in 12 twist, never could understand why remington would use such a loose twist for the .223, anyway the rifle would print decent groups with 55 grain bullets and would shoot better with lighter bullets I found the rifle to shoot 45 to 50 grain bullets the best. When I got into reloading I played with many different bullet styles and weights and found that with the 1 in 12 twist the heavier the bullet the faster you needed to push it to keep decent accuracy I tried a couple different 60 grain pills which did fine at 100 yards and found i was pushing closer and closer to maximum charges to sustain accepatable accuracy. feeling confident with a 60 grain v-max bullet with that twist rate to 100 yards I started to shoot the load at 200 yards and this is where i began to run into some seriously poor accuracy my groups openned up from 1 inch to 3 inches and at 300 yards it openned up to 6 inches and at 400 yards it was pointless wasnt even hitting paper consistantly and if i did hit paper it was a key hole. I eneded up trading that rifle to a buddy straight up for a savage model 10 in .223 which has a 1 in 9 twist it doesnt do very good with bullets lighter then 50 grains but with a 60 grain v-max the accuracy is phenominal I will post a pic of a 200 yard 10 shot group.

Try the 60 grain sierra flat base first if you want to move up. Its shorter than a boattail. And you don't need boattails till you pass 300 anyway.

My 223 has the same twist as yours,and it shoots 50,55,52,70 gr. real sweet. Try the 70gr Speer SSP.you milght be surprized with it. vangu;nsmith

How far do you shoot with that 70 grain bullet?? from my experience 70 grain bullets are even pushing it a bit with 1 in 9 twist for long distance shots. Most manufacturers recommend atleast a 1 in 7 twist for 70 grain and heavier bullets.

Thanks guys!!! Looks like I'll just have to sit at the rock for a couple hours & work up several 60gr loads. I just didn't want to start out wasting my time. At least I've got a chance sounds like.

Any suggestions... Load data for 60's ??? Looks like I'll be looking for hot ones, of coarse working my way up to them.
