Spoonbilling Dimples

Hopefully, that title will get some curiosity :)

Read something, somewhere on this internet thing we all love so much about "spoonbilling" or "dimpling" the tips (or actually just to the side of the "tip") of bullets by hand. This supposedly has little affect on accuracy (if itself is done consistently) and will cause the bullet to tumble inside the animal. Also read about filling .22 hollowpoints with vasoline to make what I assume is a crude ballistic tip. Anyone have experience or further information about this? On a scale of 1-10 my curiosity is about a 12.

be careful on that..

if you want a bullet to tumble on impact, like what military ball ammo is designed to do, you'd better be worried you have enough momentum to carry it to the far side of the vital cavity.

on the other hand, stuff like monolithic solids are designed for maximum penetration on heavy bone structure of large, dangerous game.

personally, for my money you can't beat a good stretch and crush cavity from a perfect mushroom. Does more damage to tissues harboring mass quantities of blood vessels.

I seriously doubt that either of these claims hold any water at all.....sounds like internet BS to me.

This is all a bunch of hoop lah, they orginally stated doing this practice in police work back in the 1930,s thinking it would make a wadcutter bullet mushroom more when they hit a person to kill them like shooting them with a hollow point, which they couldn,t carry. All it does is change the flight of the bullet called keyholeing which it makes it drift off to one side or the other depending on how its done and the bullet will hit sideways. Now way does it tuble inside the object it hits. This tumbling thing also started with the hitting power of the 223 on humans in vietnam. they had some speciality bullets that will take to lone to get into now! But No bullets are made to tumble. So you can forget all this garbage going around. Don,t belive all this ju;nk. And you can take that to the bank! hope i hellped clear up some of the misconceptions you might have had. vangunsmith

if you shoot a Match hp into game you will GET a tumbling bullet, but like he said... it wasn't designed to do that.

Question,. don,t you think manufacters would produce bullets like this if there was any validity to the great effect, they would have. vangunsmith:eek:

vangunsmith, I considered this...but we could go for ages about how companies care about money. If something cost too much to make, it doesn't matter if if works. If the public won't buy a product, it doesn't matter if its the best product on the market.
