Good 30-30 Deer loads
Looking for good, accurate fast 150gr 30-30 loads. Thinking of RL15 or 4064 with Nosler bullet.

RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
I can't help you, but I wanted to send you to
http://www.remington.com/ammo/ballistics/ballistics.htm Compare the ballistics of 150 to 170s, if your gun likes the 170s it seems you get a few hundred ft/lbs in trade for an inch or less. Seems worth it to me. |
RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
Man, this is a reloading page. We don't use no stinking factory bullistics charts. Those are for amateurs.:D:D We exceed those darn things, and and instead of having just bullet wieght to play with for accuracy, we get to play with COL, and powder charge. :D

RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
:(:(:(:( you done hurt my's feelings:(:(:(:(
I know I know I know, but I thought It might convince you to play with a heavier bullet for deer. I shall speak this herecy no more;) |
RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
The Winchester 150s and 170s hit the same spot on a 100 yd. target out of my model 94.
|
RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
I know soil, just having a little fun at your expense. Seems I have to use 170's I think if I was going to got with nosler anyway.
|
RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
I have always shot the 170's in my two 30-30's, I aquired my grandfathers reloading book for the 30-30 i now own, and he strictly used 4064 for his.

RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
Does PMC still load them 130 grain Starline bullets? They sound jest about right for suthrun deer?
|
RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
Since everybody else is, I figured I may as well chime in here. Have you thought about a cast bullet load? I don't know where you live, but a good cast bullet at .30-30 velocities should penetrate just as well, if not better than jacketed bullets, and should expand well too at the lower velocities of the round.

RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
Not in a ballard barrel. Kinda worried about cast in that.

RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
Finally decided it's time to reload the old 30-30 since I now have two sons shooting em too. Was cruising ebay looking for a set of dies and came across one set that included an extra factory crimp die. I'm not a hardcore reloader so please forgive if this is a dumb question, but, dont the regular dies put a crimp on the shell? Also would I be assuming correctly when I assume the crimp is a necessity in a tube magazine?
|
RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
Yes to all BT for the most part. I know my RCBS does. The Lee crimp die really puts a good crimp on pistol rounds. Never used one for a rifle however. I am going to crimp most of mine since ins in a tube.
|
RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
The factory crimp die is for use on bullets without cannelures, of for seatin' the bullet somewhere other than the cannelure. With the .30-30 you don't have the flexibility of seating depth with levers or pumps to need one. The seating die can be adjusted to put a good crimp into a cannelure or lube groove.

RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
funny coinsedence ive been playing with 30-30 loads all weekend, actually im still playing have a few more powders to test tomorrow. I am cronographing different loads looking for the best extreme spread on reduced loads and maximum loads, To help ya out big country out of all the powders ive used so far H4895, Varget, and BL-C2. Varget and H4895 are getting the highest velocities, H4895 giving the highest but Varget is getting the best extreme spread. With a 150 grain sierra flat nose with varget im getting an average velocity of 2363 fps with a extreme spread of 31 fps, with the same bullet and H4895 Im getting an avergae velocity of 2394 fps with an extreme spread of 47 fps. good luck

RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
Hello bigcountry,
You did't mention if it was single shot or lever? Watch out with pointed ammo in tube magazines, cause of possible chain fire. This is not intended as a lesson, just a reminder!! What I do is insert the first round of reloads PSP ammo of my choice in the chamber and the rest of FN's in the tube.Your first shot is what counts with a cold barrel. Pick the bullets and powder from any reloading manual.Check manufactures for bullets. Everyone has thier pet load. I prefer 150gr in PSP.....This is not intended to offend you,in no way!! KEEP ON ROOTING!!! |
RE: Good 30-30 Deer loads
Well, tried 150gr corloks sitting around with 3130 today. Wasn't spectacular by any means. Got the gun sighted in and hitting 1.75" at 50 yards. But this was just for sighting in.
Going to order 170gr partitions. Want a decently hot load. But really prefer 2MOA at 100 yards. Might be a tall order. |
