.240 Weatherby Magnum?
 

I know that the .243 Winchester and 6 mm Remington are thought to be good pronghorn antelope rounds by most people and good deer rounds by many people (though perhaps fewer than those who approve of their use for pronghorns). I rarely hear the .240 Weatherby Magnum mentioned in this context, but it would seem to be more/better medicine for the same applications. Is there some failing of the .240 Weatherby Magnum relative to the .243 and 6 mm, other than the higher cost of commercially available ammo?

The reason for the lack of popularity of the .240wby is as you say high cost of ammunition and brass and the fact that it is only chambered in overpriced weatherby rifles.

I agree I would like to see Remington bring it out in the 700 classic with at least a 24 inch barrel. Its a great round. Considerably more powerful than the two more popular 6's

Realistically tho the 240 Wby is only a blink or two ahead of the 243 and a 6mm Rem can be hotloaded over it. The 240 Wby is simply a 30/06 case with an added belt and the "Weatherby double radiused shoulder" added too it. The difference between a 7-08/280, 308/30-06 is the same as a 243 vs a 240 Wby.

BUT now dont get me wrong, I like the caliber just because its not common. If cost isnt an issue then why not? Just dont expect a HUGE jump between results with it over the more common 6mms on the market.

The .240 Wby. Mag. is an excellent cartridge. According to "Barnes Reloading Manual #1", one can push a 100 gr. bullet 3361 f/s 2508 fl/lb which will work very well on pronghorn. Good luck.

How do you do that???? How do you take a smaller case and hotrod it over a bigger case with the same bullet????? Can't you just hotrod the bigger case even more??????

I've had several .243 Win.'s since the early 70's, and a 240 Wby. since the early 80's, and 6mm Rem.'s inbetween. I've also been handloading since the 60's and i haven't figured out how to do it in my guns...

Bottom line, the 240 Wby. is the hotrod of the 6mm's, and i still don't consider it an excelent whitetail round for "most" hunters..

BTW, mine is built with a 26" bbl, on a LH 700 Rem. action, built by P.O. Ackley...

DM I meant that you can load a 6 Rem stouter than factory 240 Wby. Realistically you arent gonna get a 240 that much hotter than factory. But as you know you can really turn either the 243 or a 6mm up several notches.

Filler up with blue fuel and LIGHT THAT MUTHER UP!!!
