The 150 gr. sst was designed to work best at 30-06 velocity. The shot you made was a worst case scenario for that bullet, i.e. very high retained velocity (40 yrds) and you hit the shoulder bone. I wouldn't give up on the sst bullets just yet. Try the 180gr in your .300 mag. Sight in 2.5" high at 100 yards and you won't need any holdover at 300 yards.

RedAllison, I have to differ with you on the performance of ballistic tip bullets. I've taken a lot of animals with the Nosler solid base ballistic tip bullet, 130 gr. .270, which is not a partitioned nor a bonded bullet. Animals taken included whitetails, antelope, black bear and mule deer. Ranges for shots ranged from 25 yds to over 400 yds.
I have my 7-08 loaded up with the 139 gr Hornady SSTs and hoping to see how they perform on deer starting tomorrow (opening day). They are the most accurate bullets I've fired from this rifle to date.

personally wont ever use em again, today i hit an average sized doe right behind the shoulder with a 165gr sst from my 30-06 and it didnt even pentrate! large hole at impact site and mush about 6 inches into the deer, also hit a 6point buck and all i found was 2 blood spots about half the size of a mans fist, back to sierra game kings for me!
