Metal Work help
Can some of you machinist explain to me how to polish a collet. I have a sinclair neck turner, and the only way I can use it is to run my cases in a mouth expander. But after running my cases thru my FL die, I have one heck of a time getting my case back out of the expander without pulling the mandrel out. All these are from Sinclair Intl. They suggested a polish the mandrel in a drill. I have tried 300 grit sandpaper, but there has to be a better, faster method to smooth this down. I also would like to polish my collet die from Lee for more neck tension. But I don't seem to be removing any material. I would like to remove .0005" to .001".

RE: Metal Work help
why dont you bring the stuff you mentioned with you next time we hook up, we have all sorts of polishing things in the machine shop where I work, including dremel polishing wheels, jewelers rouge, etc, plus if we have to I can put it in the lathe, and polish in there. I dont know exactly what you are talking about, Id have to see it, to figure out the best way of doing it.

RE: Metal Work help
I take ya up on that if I can't get it tonight. I am stopping at Napa on the way home and picking up a crocus cloth or emery paper.
go to www.sinclairintl.com and I have a mouth expander die. Basically to turn the necks, you have to open the mouth on the brass a tad more than your expander ball does on a FL sizer die. http://www.sinclairintl.com/cgi-bin/...-XX&type=store |
RE: Metal Work help
Mossy, I used some very fine steel wool and got her polished nice. I don't care what sinclair says, they need to be polished. I had one tech level with me and say everyone complains that they are pulling out the mandrel and you have to drill a little dimple in it to keep it from coming out, and suggested polishing. Others say they never heard of the problem.
