HORNADY XTP MAG

I am not a reloader but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the hornady xtp bullet. I just purchased a ruger super redhawk in a .44 mag, and I am planning on using hornady factory ammo 240 gr xtp for deer and 300 gr xtp for hogs. Is this a good load for deer and hogs? Or can you recommend a good factory load as I do not relaod. Thanks for your help in advance.

Is it a good load? Does the pope wear a funny hat? Its an exceptional load. I load mine with 23.5gr of H110 with a 240gr XTP kickin at a cool 1450fps and have penetrated the shoulder and hit the heart and still exited.

I also purchased a SRH last spring and plan to hunt with a 320gr cast bullet. I have been told the heavier bullet is more accurate and a little more forgiving of missed vitals. True... it may tear up more meat, but I would rather find the deer than track for hours only to loose all the meat.

I love hornady XTP bullets, I use them in my 357 magnum. I load a 180 grain HP/XTP sitting on 15.8 grains of Vectan SP3, shot from a friends ruger 357 maximum with a 10 inch barrel the load achieved 1410 fps and from my Ruger GP100 with a 6 inch I dont know what velocity its pushing all I know is the buck I shot last year at about 40 yards ran about 15 yards and fell over dead the bullet penetrated through the shoulder split the heart nearly in two I recovered the bullet just under the skin just in front of the right shoulder, it was a perfect mushroom and had pretty good weight retension the before 180 grain bullet now weighed 157 grains.

From one SC boy to another...Welcome to the forum! To reiterate, either the 240 or 300 are more than adequate for deer or hogs. I took a 257# hog 3 years ago with my SRH using 300gr XTPs over 20.5 gr W296. He was about to take off so I had to shoot quick at not the best angle...ok, well almost straight on at about 40 yards. the bullet traversed the entire torso and we found it in the left ham. The hog ran about 30 yards before he expired. The XTp had left a pretty good wound channel but did not expand much. On all deer I've shot with it I haven't been able to recover any bullets.

I use the 300 grain Hornady XTP in my muzzle loader and my 44 mag rifles and pistols. It it the best bullet I have found in 25 years of reloading. Hornady sells these as loaded ammo. They have them at Cabelas and many other good gun shops. I also like the Winchester loading of the 250 grain Partition in 44.
