180 grain or heavier bullet loads for a 30-30??
 

Just wondering if anyone knows of any loads for 30-30 that uses a heavier bullet then 180 grains , was thinking in the lines of a 200 to 220 grain bullet.

Even if you find that heavy of a bullet for the 30-30, they will be going so slow that they will not expand right, also they will drop like rocks.

The 30-30 case capicity is just too small, and actually you just don't need heavier bullets than 170 grain anyway. Use Federals Nosler Partition load, and it will do just fine on anything you "should" be useing a 30-30 on.

An additional problem with bullets this long in a .30/30 is that the twist rate is 1/12", so stability would be very marginal at the speeds possible from the .30/30 case.....

I agree.....stay with the standard 170 grain round nose and flat nose bullets. Heavier bullets won't gain a thing.

I remember seeing an article by Sam Fadala where he advocated loading 190 grain RN bullets designed for the .303 Savage in the .30/30. He thought very highly of the penetration abilities of it. I have loaded 200 grain cast bullets at fairly low velocities, and have never had a problem with stability.

Thats the whole Idea im not looking for performance, I'm looking to make a load that is generally not practical and figuring out what I can do to improve on it. Just lookin for something to play around a bit with something different I have no intentions on making a tack driver load nor a practical hunting load just something to say hey look what I did.

I dont care about the velocity either I will be happy with it even if it just has a velocity of 1300 fps if i did use it for game it would just be on hogs at close range. I know of a few cowboy 30-30 loads that push a 170 grain bullet at about 1200 to 1300 fps I tried some of those I never had issues with a unstable bullet each of those loads i used would shoot pretty accurate at 100 yards

You are smokin crack!!! My marlin 336 has a 1 in 10" rh twist
surely thats good enough to stabalize a 200 grain bullet for 100 yard or less shots.

what on earth are you hunting with a 30-30 that you need that heavy of a bullet? With the heavier bullet your moving slower & your range won't be as far with the heavy bullet.

I'm hunting paper, I was just looking for something to play with experiment a bit and if they panned out maybe use them on hogs.
