Reloading slugs?
Anybody reloading slugs?
I've done a few and plan to pursue it more soon. I've got a Lee 12 gauge mold and a Lyman mold for the 20 guage. I haven't done much testing with the 20 yet but I've got groups out of the Lee slug and a rifled barrel that easily match the best I ever got out of foster slugs and a smooth slug barrel. |
RE: Reloading slugs?
Are you shooting lead slugs in a rifled barrel, or are you reloading sabot rounds? Just curious on the particulars of the Lee slug.
I have seen a few articles on reloading slugs, they were the foster type intended for smoothbores. |
RE: Reloading slugs?
The lee slug uses standard 12 gau. wads with the pettels this lets the rifling spin the slug and wad.
I have several slug molds that I got at a auction for $1 each never got serious just messed around but got some ok groups. |
RE: Reloading slugs?
I have the lee 12 ga slug mold too, I love it. asfar as accuracy I noticed with lower velocities in using a trap type load with the slug shooting around 1200 to 1290 fps the accuracy lacks, good to 25 yards and just decent at 50 and not very good at 100 yards. If one could achieve higher velocities with these slugs I think the accuracy would increase since most slug barrels have a 1 in 32 twist rate I feel that much weight needs a little more spin for stability achieved by higher velocity. If you know of any loadings that could produce around 1500 fps safely with these lee slugs I think that would be the ticket.

RE: Reloading slugs?
I had the Lee mold. Never could get a group better than about a foot @50 yds. Bought the Lyman sabot mold. Get groups about can size from those. I seem to be the only person who couldn't get good groups from the Lee slugs though.
