Factory Loads or handloads for kids H&R?
 

My Grandson has a used single shot H&R in 30-30. It has a 3-9x32 Bushnell. Just wondering if its worth the effort to handload some 165 or other weight ? pointed bullets rather than use the factory flat points designed for lever actions. Any load recommendations?:eek:

Maybe not worth the effort if you're adding much in the way of recoil. Guess it depends on the kid involved, and how far and at what you're shooting. The 30/30 can almost impress you with good bullets, giving near (almost) .308 performance if you factor in the short barrels that most 30/30s have. How long is that H&R barrel?

He's 11, max range would be 150 yards at deer and hogs. 18.5 inch barrel. Thinking maybe some 130 grain pointed bullets. :eek:

Unless you're really just looking for a project to work on, I'd stick with factory or "factory" reloads in the 150 gr. range. I don't think 18 inches or so of barrel will give you much difference in performance, and you're not shooting really long distance. I'd gladly trade a little velocity for retained energy at distance too, with hogs especially.

I could be wrong though. Nothing wrong with trying. More loads means more excuses to practice too.

Try loading some you will be surprised what preformance you can obtain. Good luck.

NEVER use factory ammo if you have time to develop a good handload for a rifle.......:D
