45/70

Just bought a Marlin 1895G in 45/70 I reload my own cartridges for my other guns, and want a good load for this gun. I have seen factory ammo offered by a company called Buffalo Bore boasting energy levels of 3500 ft. lbs. with a 405grn bullet. Would like to make my ammo as powerful as possible and duplicate these numbers. What is the difference in say Winchester factory ammo and this Buffalo Bore? Better yet does anyone have any load info for this caliber that I could try? Thank you much for any input.........Charliebuck

RE: 45/70

I have 3 45/70's and the winchester and remington loads that i have tried are really light loads.
In my Marlin I like the 350gr. Hornady JFN on top of Varget. For a lead bullet, cast my own and they are 420gr. from a mold I had made.
The Hodgdon loading book has a section on strong lever guns (Marlins) and thats the best place I have found for load data.
The most accurate load I have used is with a 400 gr. Barnes. BUT,YOU CAN ONLY PUT ONE IN THE TUBE AND ONE IN THE CHAMBER. DO NOT PUT MORE THAN ONE IN THE TUBE(magazine).

RE: 45/70

My favorite load for my 45-70 Guide Gun is 56.0 grains of H335, CCI 250 primer, and the Hornady 350 grain Interlock Flat Point. Velocity out of the Guide Gun is 1800FPS, and groups are one ragged hole at 50 yards.
Recoil is moderate. I'm going to be trying the same load, but with a Oregon Trail Laser Cast 350 grain Flat Point in the next few days...

BTW, max charge on the above load is 60.0 grains of H335, velocity is 1950FPS. About 10 rounds of that load off the bench is enough for me. Talk about your excedrine headache! Mind your OAL, so you get reliable feeding.
