307 Winchester load
 

I' m about to finish shooting the factory ammo that I' ve had for my 307 and it' s time to start working up a load for it. Any suggestings on bullet/powder preferences. I already load H380 and 748 for other cartridges so I' m thinking that' s a good start point. Thanks, Rick

.307 Winchester, 20" barrel, Hornady 170 Gr Flat nose interlock, 41.3 grains Win 748.....2400' /sec....that' s a max load BTW.

Thanks for the input guys, AK that is a way cool site for the hard to find data. Vapodog, have you tried any loads for 150 gr bullets? The factory loaded 180' s that I had were a little stout on recoil, not that I' m recoil shy or anything it' s just that that load kicked harder than my 06 with 165' s. I realize that not many have any experience loading for the 307 win and data is just as scarce. Any other input is still welcome, once again thanks.

I suspect the recoil is due to the lightweight lever guns chambered for the .307.

The data I gave you is straight from Hornady' s loading manual. There' s four loads for 150 grain and four loads for 170 grain bullets listed there.

I have a Marlin 336 rechambered/ new barrel for this cartridge years ago--(before the .308 marlin express came out) and I love it. My barrel is 26" long (Dougla XX) with a heavy taper (muzzle dia. .775) and full length magazine tube. Makes for about a 10-lb gun, but holds real steady. The loads that worked best for my gun are:

Hornady 150gr. RN /H4895 /Rem 7-1/2 @2659 FPS
accuracy averages at .695 @ 100 yards. --best group(.510)

Sierra 150gr. FN /IMR 4064 /Rem 7-1/2 @2720 FPS
accuracy averages at .715 @ 100 yards.

I would not shoot factory .307 loads in it, they are more pressure than the marlin rifle will like. For handloaders, this is not a problem best accuracy will be below max pressures anyway.

FPS is average shot over chrono at shooting range.The Speer #13 manual has load data for 150 and 170gr. bullets. Good place to start.
I did not give powder charges, you will need to work them up for your own gun for safety. Published load data is for a 20" barrel, mine is a 26" barrel.

I cant figure out why the 307 didnt take off better than it did. Nice round for a lever gun.
