Midway bulk brass

I bought some Hornady brass from Midway. Hornady is far from my favorite brass but it was all I could find. I was inspecting the cases and found one case with no flash hole. As I have never seen a case with no flash hole before I phoned Hornady just to give them the "heads up" (I do not want anything). The fellow in CS that I spoke with was polite but showed no concern at all for the issue. He told me that factory packaged brass was inspected by Hornady, but "you get what you get" when you buy from a place like Midway that buys in bulk and does not inspect the brass before packaging.

I am not going to bother contacting Midway. They are not an outfit with which I am favorably impressed, and that would just be another waste of time

thousands of cases are manufactured every hour,
theres bound to be a few screw-ups,
in millions of cases made by any manufacturer
Id either pitch the case or drill a flash hole
THE SAME SIZE AS THE GOOD CASES

Of course there are manufacturing errors. If Hornady had a problem with a run they should want to know. I was told that Hornady do not do any QC inspections on brass being sold in bulk to resellers.

It went into the old/bad brass bucket.

Well the sheer number of brass produced during a run is statistically likely to have some with issues. Its the same with any type of manufacturing process. And as far as QC Inspections go, it has been proven that even with 100% inspection there will be issues that get through. I can state this with certainty as I've been in the QC business for 37 years before retiring.

I’ve tended to expect at least one cull when buying 100ct or more of any brand of brass, except Norma, Nosler, and Lapua, and even these, when buying a few hundred, aren’t without fault.

That said, I buy 500ct of Hornady bulk repackaged 6 Creedmoor brass from MidwayUSA every year for the last 4 seasons, and when it’s available, I’ll order more this year. It’s as cheap as I can buy it anywhere (save ordering 5,000ct of my own direct from Hornady), and it shoots in the .1-.4’s with single digit SD’s, regardless of whether I anneal or not... so I’m not casting a stone at that particular house.

I would inspect every piece of brass I use to reload before loading it. New or used. I also would expect a few bad apples occasionally in the batch. Just the way things are now. Very little quality in anything mfg'd now days. Thanks Walmart.
