Bullet for a 1-12" twist 300 Weatherby?
 

After fixing my late grandfather's 300 Weatherby, I decided I wanted to attempt to take a deer with it this upcoming season. I'm trying to decide on a bullet to use. The problem is, the old German-made Weatherby is a 1-12" twist. As I discovered while shooting various handloads, it doesn't shoot 180 grain bullets well at all, but it'll group 150 grain SST's in about an inch at 100 yards.

I'm looking for a bullet that will provide good terminal performance out to 300 yards or more, but will work in a 1-12" twist. Here's a few I've been looking at trying:

150 grain Hornady SST
130 or 150 grain Barnes TTSX
155 or 168 grain Berger VLD

Definitely open to other suggestions. I know, I know, I should go with the one that shoots best in my rifle. I'm just looking for a good place to start.

Any bullet in that weight class should work.

I've shot deer with both the sst a ttsx in both weights. All have performed well. Although not at .300 wby velocity. I've loaded those for .30-06 and .300 Savage. Rather slow in comparison.

I am glad you decided to take a deer with it. I have rifles from both my grandpa's and I try to get them out every few years and put them to work in the woods.

the barnes 150 tsx works well in my experience,
deer are rather easy too kill if the shots placed well, and if you get decent penetration,
a 300 wby is at shorter ranges...a bit over-kill but at long range ,
its certainly a good option
your certainly not the first guy to find that the slower twist rate on some rifles prevents accurate use of some heavier bullet options
on deer its not a big handicap using the 150 grain bullets as rapid expansion is devastatingly effective on mid (B) or lower chest hits,(C) to heart/lungs

I would try the mid-weight (150-165) Accubond. If you go with a Barnes bullet the TTSX would be my choice - not the TSX. I have given up on the older TSX for 30 caliber and smaller cartridges.

Are you loading near the max velocity, or are you trying to find something just a bit slower?

No problem using 180gr either in a 1-12 twist works in my Browning FN Safari in .308 Norma Magnum.
