,45-70

I'm just wondering if anyone has a newer Hornady Handloading manual. After all this time I just noticed that while my other manuals list the case length for the .45-70 as 2.105" my two older Hornady manuals list the length as 2.035".
That's a mighty big difference and I'm wondering if they ever caught that error?!?!

Both Hornady 9 and 10 show 2.105" on the cartridge drawing as well as the listed Max Case Length (which is SAAMI Max Spec, min spec is 2.085"). The Trim-To length in both is 2.095", which is pretty common for them - SAAMI spec is -.020, so they go -.010. Both list the trim-to length for the 250grn Monoflex and 325 FTX as 2.040", in deference to the longer ogive and tip on these bullets.

I'll assume the 2.035" trim to length is in some way associated with the FTX or Monoflex bullets, being 5 thou shorter than the specified Trim To length in the 2 more recent versions. As noted above, SAAMI spec is 2.105 - 0.020", so trim length should be between 2.085 and 2.105 (clean chamber, perfectly cut to spec).

NoMercy my two manuals are from way back. The one is over 50 years old and the other about 40 or so. I think I'll just drop a line to Hornady and see what they say about it.

No idea why they would have had the 2.035" length way back.

Both the 9 and 10 have 2.105" max, 2.095" Trim, and the special 2.040" for the FTX. Betting there's nobody left at Hornady which will have any idea why it had the wrong number 50yrs ago.

I zipped a letter off to hornady just to see what they are going to say. I told them that I had trimmed 50 cases to that length and would they foul or ring my chamber? Maybe they will be nice about it and send me a bag of new brass!!!

Any word back from Hornady on the old prints with short cases?

Nothing...I guess they don't want to admit their error or maybe no one there has a copy of the initial manuals! Who knows?
