Berger Bullet report

I often wondered about how accurate the Burger bullets really were so I went and purchased 2 boxes of the 175 gr VLD (Hunting) bullets which were supposedly designed for my Tikka 30-06 with its 1:10 twist.
When I got to the range I sent 3 rounds of my Sierra Game King 180 gr bullets down range to foul the barrel and to verify zero.
I let the barrel cool while I went to check the target. My first shot was about 1" right and 1" high (I presume that is because I forgot to swab the oil out of the bore before I left..:nonono2:) But the next 2 were touching 1/2" high and 1/2" left of the 1" bull.
I set a new "shoot-n-see" target up and headed back to the bench.
The first Berger hit in the same spot. 1/2" high and 1/2" left. The second, after a minute wait basically went in the same hole. And after another minute and the third just enlarged the hole. I thought I'd make it a 5 shot group so I fired the next 2 off. I should have waited a bit because the barrel was heating up and in the 90* + temps didn't cool off much. The 4th and 5th hit on either side of the ragged hole leaving a sliver of paper between them and the tiny cluster. Still the group measured in at slightly over 3/4". I was really satisfied with the load which was 49 gr of IMR4064 and CCI200 primer. I'm glad of that because that is the same charge I use for my Sierras.
I had a load of 54 gr of IMR4350 also made up and tried them but the groups were a bit larger than those of the 4064 load.

You ever chrono your 180's Bronk?

bronko22000 07-25-2016 03:39 PM

No MM. I do have a Chrony but I have only used it for speed checking my bows. I have yet to check any bullet speeds. The Bergers are 175s

I also wonder how they will be for killing power? Will the open up?
Bronk, shoot some into jugs of water or sand to see.

That's definitely some good shooting on your part. IMR 4064 is a pretty good powder.
